‘Unfortunate situation’ as MacDonald Mines reviews exploration results of Sudbury project

t’s stunning news when a mining exploration company must retract its drill assay results. Now two gold companies operating in Northern Ontario have been forced to do so within a month.

Following on the heels of Red Pine Exploration’s Wawa assay fiasco, MacDonald Mines Exploration, a junior mining outfit operating in the Sudbury area, reportedly has found “inconsistencies in certain assay results” at its Scadding gold prospect. MacDonald is withdrawing all of the announced results for Scadding as the results are deemed not reliable.

Eabametoong Chief says agreement with Storm Exploration is a ‘model for others to follow’

Vancouver’s Storm Exploration has signed an exploration agreement with the Eabametoong First Nation (EFN) regarding planned activity around its Fort Hope Projects in the remote James Bay region.

In a May 23 news release, Bruce Counts, Storm’s president-CEO, called the signing a “major milestone” that offers mutual benefits for both the company and community. Storm’s Miminiska, Keezhik and Attwood projects are 350 kilometres north of Thunder Bay within a mineralized geological structure called the Miminiska-Fort Hope greenstone belt.

Red Pine Exploration takes no questions during webcall but still touts Wawa exploration project

Though Red Pine Exploration’s reputation has taken a severe hit, the Toronto gold company still believes in the untapped mineral potential of its Wawa Gold Project, said board chair Paul Martin.

In a May 15 webcall to shareholders, the Wawa gold explorer began the campaign to dig itself out of an emerging scandal involving published drill assay results that the company alleges were tampered with by former CEO Quentin Yarie.

There’s a new gold exploration player operating in the Ring of Fire area of the James Bay lowlands region. And ONGold is placing an emphasis on establishing solid ties with Indigenous communities, beginning with its selection of its first CEO and filling out the boardroom seats.

ONGold is a spinoff company of Northern Superior Resources. Its shares went live last week and are now trading on the TSX Venture Exchange (TSX-V) trading under the symbol ONAU. Northern Superior remains the largest shareholder at 72 per cent.

Dryden mine builder picking up copper, gold property in Alaska to gain equity market recognition

Dryden-area mine developer Treasury Metals is out to create a project pipeline with its proposed acquisition of Blackwolf Copper and Gold, owner of the Niblack project in Alaska.

The developer of the Goliath Gold project announced earlier this month that it had signed a definitive arrangement agreement with Blackwolf that would see the two companies merge this summer. In a news release, Treasury said this merger will be beneficial in helping to advance its main Goliath Gold project toward production, east of Dryden.

Best mine rescuers from across Ontario get to compete for bragging rights at the provincial competition in Thunder Bay next month

Two Mine Rescue teams from the Greater Sudbury area will have a chance to compete in the all-Ontario Mine Rescue competition to be held June 4-7 at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay.

The Sudbury area teams representing the Onaping District and the Sudbury District were among many mine rescue teams that took part in eight district competitions across the province, May 8 to 10.

Akeeagok, leaders from Yukon and N.W.T. meet over 4 days in Pond Inlet for Northern Premiers’ Forum

To strengthen sovereignty and security in Canada’s North, the federal government needs to invest in infrastructure that can also benefit northern communities, Premier P.J. Akeeagok said Thursday. “For many years, as northern premiers, we’ve been voicing the importance that Arctic security and sovereignty [means] seeing our communities vibrant,” he said in Iqaluit.

Akeeagok spoke during a press conference with the premiers of Yukon and Northwest Territories, following their annual Northern Premiers’ Forum where their territories’ shared interests are discussed.

Mines Minister George Pirie lauds Ontario’s mineral deposits, environmental standards, expertise in search for critical minerals

Ontario Mines Minister George Pirie said this week securing a supply of critical minerals in Canada is being done for the right reasons: to improve the country’s environmental status.

Speaking on May 6 as part of the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities conference at the Holiday Inn and again at Dynamic Earth, Pirie commented on his recent trip to Washington, D.C., where he met with government representatives at the Energy Transition Metals Summit. Pirie was one of the featured speakers at that event.

Mines Minister George Pirie confirms additional funding will be added to the Critical Minerals Innovation Fund over the next three years to boost research into sustainable extraction of new metals required to support the battery electric vehicle industry

Ontario Mines Minister George Pirie said today Ontario is committed to strengthening the province’s critical minerals strategy in the global race to ensure there is a stable supply chain for battery electric vehicles by spending millions in new science and technology to help do that. He said the effort is already underway in Sudbury to develop new ways to procure more critical minerals.

Pirie said the Ontario government will be spending $15 million over the next three years to expand the Ontario Critical Minerals Innovation Fund (CMIF), which is a re-announcement of the funding increase that was announced as part of the Ontario budget earlier this year.

French President Emmanuel Macron shocked the world on February 26 by suggesting that Europeans may have to send troops to help Ukraine. Then on May 4, he doubled-down and said French troops would go to Ukraine if Kyiv requested their help. He also described Europe as “mortal” and said that “things can fall apart very quickly” because the US is no longer guarantor of Europe’s security.

“I have a clear strategic objective: Russia cannot win in Ukraine,” Macron said. “If Russia wins in Ukraine, there will be no security in Europe. Who can pretend that Russia will stop there? What security will there be for neighboring countries, Moldova, Romania, Poland, Lithuania and the others?” His clarion call was echoed by the leader of Europe’s other nuclear power, Britain’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who said “if Putin is allowed to succeed in this war of aggression, he will not stop at the Polish border”.

Strong production at Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd.’s Nunavut gold mines played a role in achieving a “record” first quarter this year, the company says. Agnico released its first quarterly financial report for 2024 last week.

CEO Ammar Al-Joundi said in a news release the company is reporting a “second consecutive quarter of record operating margins and record free cash flow.” The company reported an adjusted net income of around US$377.5 million for the first quarter of this year from its mining operations around the world. That’s up from around US$282.3 million the previous quarter.

Report encourages mining industry to target smaller mineral deposits to fill the critical minerals supply gap

Canada has an abundance of small, high-grade mineral deposits. There just doesn’t seem to be much of an appetite by the mining industry to tap into them. Small deposits are being overlooked, said a report prepared by B.C.-based Common Good Mining, because of the perception that they’re not economic due to assumed high costs, and lack of infrastructure or technology to put them into production.

But small-scale mining is a business model that’s worth exploring, (said the report), especially if Canada requires more critical minerals to feed the green-tech revolution.

Russia’s economy has been sanctioned, punished, and distorted as a result of its war. But loopholes and workarounds have been devised to avoid sanctions, fossil fuel bans, and the G7 oil price cap. The West must escalate its economic war against Moscow by increasing restrictions and by punishing sanctions-busters.

In December, Washington announced sanctions on foreign banks facilitating transactions with Russia — a measure aimed at China, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and India — which is starting to work. But Ukraine’s allies must crack down on illegal trade by China and confiscate the $300 billion of Russian central bank assets that were frozen after the 2022 invasion.

Michael Michaud brings a geologist’s eye to advance Red Pine Exploration’s Wawa Gold Project

In its search for a new leader, Wawa gold hunter Red Pine Exploration snagged someone with familiarity of the Michipicoten greenstone belt.

Michael Michaud will bring fresh eyes to Red Pine’s Wawa Gold Project when he relinquishes his title as Wesdome Gold Mine’s senior vice-president of exploration on July 11 and takes the helm as president-CEO of the Toronto junior miner on July 19. Red Pine made the announcement in an April 22 news release. He replaces Quentin Yarie who stepped down in late February. Yarie has been with the company since 2009 but will stay on in an advisory role through the transition.

The NWT’s Ekati diamond mine is asking regulators for permission to turn its Sable open pit into an underground mining operation. Beginning to mine underground at Sable is an important milestone in Ekati owner Burgundy’s attempt to keep the mine running – in some form – until 2040.

Submitting plans for Sable earlier this month, Ekati urged regulators to provide “timely authorization” of the initial work needed to switch to underground mining.
