The new shaft at Bell Creek Mine has been in operation since December, and management with Tahoe Resources Canada say the increase in productivity has been immediate.

“We currently are down to 1,200 metres below surface with our ramp but it’s become uneconomic to do that with trucks,” Peter Van Alphen, vice-president of operations for Tahoe Canada, who was in Timmins Tuesday for the official opening of the Bell Creek shaft.

“We’ve now taken the shaft down to a thousand (1,080) meters and that creates a whole new environment for us here at Bell Creek … Productivity will go up, costs will come down and we can increase our production rate.”

Company said the hiring process is about to begin.

IAMGOLD and Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. are getting ready to begin hiring for jobs related to the construction of the Côté Gold Project south of Gogama.

The two companies are in a joint venture on the new open pit gold mine that was formerly known as the Trelawney Project, about 130 kilometres south of Timmins. The project is located just a few kilometres west of Highway 144. A company update revealed that construction for the new mine is slated to begin in 2019 and the company is looking to hire the right people.

“During this time, Côté Gold will be recruiting for key management and supervisory roles in mining, geology, operations and maintenance as well as support roles,” said the company newsletter.

Steve Black investigated city acquiring Far North deposits after Cliffs departure

In his first week in office, Timmins Mayor Steve Black wanted to buy a mine. Sharing the story of how he wanted to purchase the Ring of Fire is one of the memories he shared about his time in office as he chaired his final council meeting Nov. 13.

Being elected as a councillor in 2010 was a life-changing moment for Black. When the next election rolled around, he won the mayor’s seat. Back in 2014 in his first week on the job as mayor, he recalled going to the CAO and announcing his desire to buy a mine.

At the time, former owner Cliffs Natural Resources was looking to pull out of the project. Knowing the importance of having what is now Noront come to Timmins, Black wanted the city to have control of its destiny.

Like other gold companies across the North, the third quarter of 2018 was not kind to Tahoe Resources Inc., the parent company for Tahoe Canada which operates the Timmins West mining complex and the Bell Creek Mine and Mill in Timmins.

The company has reported a third quarter earnings loss of $190 million, which compares with a loss of only $8.4 million for the same period last year. This represents a $0.61 loss per share.

The Hoyle Pond Mine in Timmins has become something of a testing ground for many pieces of mining equipment destined for the new all-electric Borden Lake gold project near Chapleau.

It might also turn out that Hoyle Pond and other “traditional” mines will eventually rely more and more on using all-electric equipment.

Borden is the newest gold mine operation for Goldcorp’s Porcupine Gold Mines division, which also includes Hoyle Pond, the Hollinger open pit and the Dome Mine and milling complex now being studied for the possible Century Project.

Federal Natural Resources Minister Amarjeet Sohi toured the new mine facility on Monday with Goldcorp officials and technical representatives of the mining equipment manufacturers who are working to make it the first all-electric underground mine in Canada, which is considered a major environmental improvement for the mining industry.

Most children that are granted a wish usually want to go to Disney World, but not seven-year-old Aliesha from Bowmanville, in southern Ontario.

She wanted to be a miner for a day, and thanks to several organizations, she got to fulfill her personal goal.

Aliesha lives with a nervous system disorder and made the trip to Timmins with the help of the Toronto and Central Make-A-Wish Foundation, resource company Sherritt International and mining company Goldcorp.

The Tahoe Resources mine rescue team from Timmins is back home after a gruelling week spent at the biennial International Mine Rescue Competition held in Ekaterinburg, Russia. The competition ran Sept. 22 to 28.

Team Tahoe didn’t take home the winning hardware but Timmins Mine Rescue Officer Danny Taillefer said Tahoe and Ontario Mine Rescue performed well despite the stiff competition.

One of the seven Russian teams participating in the event, Emercom, took the overall top honours. A feather in the cap for Team Tahoe was a certificate for being the team with the fastest time for correctly performing various mock disaster scenarios.

McEwen Mining provides mid-year update on exploration, development activities

Rob McEwen is so confident in the quality of his namesake company and its deposits he’s put $160 million of his own capital into their development, and is taking a salary of just $1 per year, without a bonus or options.

“So why such a big commitment?” he asked during a Sept. 7 mid-year webcast report to investors. “I’m a big believer in our future, the potential of our properties, the skill of our team, and the power of mining to make a meaningful contribution to society at large.”

McEwen is the founder, chair, and chief shareholder of McEwen Mining, which owns a number of gold and base metals properties in the Timmins area, in addition to the El Gallo Mine in Mexico, the San José Mine in Argentina, the Gold Bar property in Nevada, Project Fenix in Mexico, and the Los Azules property in Argentina.

The new IAMGOLD Coté Lake gold mine project is going to be bigger than most people expect according to the company president and CEO Stephen J.J. Letwin, who spoke to the business community of Timmins at the Dante Club on Friday.

He said the project will generate more than $9 billion in economic activity over the 17-year production life of the mine as well as generating billions in payroll. Letwin said this would create a positive impact on the economies of Timmins, Sudbury, Gogama and Northern Ontario.

Letwin was in Timmins with several other company executives as they were taking part in an inspection tour of the new property located south of Gogama, and just a few kilometres west of Highway 144 in Chester and Yeo Townships.

A united effort is underway this week to help the Timmins mine rescue team from Tahoe Resources Canada put in a good showing when the team takes part in the International Mine Rescue Competition (IMRC) being held in Russia later this month.

The Timmins team, aside from winning the Timmins District mine rescue competition held in May, also won the all-Ontario mine rescue competition in June. As such, the team was challenged to take part in the IMRC event happening in Ekaterinburg, Russia, from Sept. 22 to 29.

On Wednesday, Team Tahoe stepped up its game as members of the Timmins fire department were joined by mine rescue officers from across Ontario to provide intense speciality training to the Timmins mine rescuers. This took place at the Northern College fire training site.

The largest gold mining company in Timmins is providing financial support to the city’s new Indigenous Advisory Committee. Goldcorp Porcupine Gold Mines PGM announced on Thursday it would match the support provided by the municipality earlier this year when city council approved $50,000 in funding.

That figure was matched this week with a cheque from Goldcorp PGM for $50,000. “When we heard of the initiative, we jumped in to support it,” said Goldcorp Sustainability Manager Bryan Neeley.

“The contribution will improve the committee’s ability to execute on different initiatives. Our relationship with our Indigenous Partners is a core belief of the company and treating all people with respect regardless of their diversity, is important in the workplace as well as in the community.”

Tahoe Resources mine rescuers from Timmins were ranked as the best mine rescue team in Ontario for 2018.

The winning Ontario Mine Rescue team from Tahoe Canada in Timmins will be participating in the International Mine Rescue Competition (IMRC) in Russia next month.

Team Tahoe, led by Adam Weagle of Timmins, was the winning mine rescue group at the Timmins District Mine Rescue competition held at the Archie Dillon Sportsplex in May.

From there Team Tahoe moved to the all-Ontario mine rescue competition, which was held in Matachewan at the Alamos Gold Young-Davidson mine. Tahoe emerged as the top ranked team in Ontario. Team members are from the Timmins West mining complex and the Bell Creek Mine.

McEwen Mining Inc. (TSX:MUX) investors were told Wednesday that the recently acquired Black Fox mining property (formerly Primero Mining Corp.) near Matheson, is on its way to becoming a sustainable cash-generating operation for the company.

The company also revealed that Chris Stewart is the new President and COO for McEwan. It was just a year ago this week that McEwen revealed it was setting out to purchase the gold mine near Matheson, with all its adjoining properties, for $35 million US. The deal went through last fall.

A statement from Andrew Elinesky, the company’s chief financial officer, as he provided an overview of finances and operations during the one-hour teleconference, indicated that McEwen is more than happy with the purchase.
