Keeping comms open in one of the world’s deepest mines: Kidd Mine gives iPhones to everyone in the mine – by Len Gillis (Northern Ontario Business – February 10, 2020)

With the Kidd Mine in Timmins being the deepest base metal mine in the world, Kidd Operations has made improved communications one of its key priorities. That was brought forward by operations engineer Patrick Desmarais during the recent Beyond Digital Transformation mining conference held in Sudbury.

He outlined how the company had installed a fibre-optic network through the mine. That resulted in a complete underground Wi-Fi system, and in the past year it was followed up by giving every worker an iPhone for instant communication, from level to level and from surface to the bottom of the mine.

Kidd is a blasthole mine that is 9,889 feet deep, operating on 32 active levels and is mining at the rate of 1.9 million tonnes per year.

More jobs and industry projects are coming to Timmins in 2020, according to Mayor George Pirie. In an interview, he told The Daily Press his New Year’s resolutions for the city involve stimulating the economy with more jobs and industry projects to move the city forward.

Pirie detailed a number of initiatives, including an announcement on the status of IAMGOLD Corporation’s Côté Lake Gold Project. The billion-dollar mining project is close to getting its environmental permits approved while continuing its development by de-risking, drilling and adding resources.

Access to Côté Lake was also the reason the city asked the Ministry of Transportation to increase the speed limit from 80 to 90 kilometres per hour on Hwy. 101 West.

When gold was discovered near Timmins, Ont., in 1909, the area attracted fortune hunters from all over the world. Many Jewish merchants headed to northern Ontario to set up stores in small towns and settlements throughout the region.

Two of those people were Max Steinberg and Joe Mahn. Steinberg, a German immigrant, went to the northern bush camps in 1918 to sell watches and clothing. In 1919, he and Mahn – they had met in Montreal – opened Steinberg & Mahn, a menswear store in Timmins.

This month, Steinberg & Mahn, Timmins’ longest-operating family owned menswear clothier, is marking its 100th anniversary. The Steinberg family has run the store continuously since 1919 and the fourth generation is now at the helm.

CHAPLEAU — Up to 250 jobs have been created with the opening of the new Borden mine in Chapleau. The mine held its official inauguration Monday.

As the first electric mine in the world, it features “state-of-the-art” health and safety controls, digital mining technologies and processes and low-carbon energy vehicles.

The underground fleet will eliminate diesel particulate matter from the environment and lower greenhouse gas emissions to help reduce energy costs, protect employee health and minimize impacts to the environment. Marc Lauzier, general manager for the Newmont Goldcorp Porcupine and Borden mines, said Borden sets a global standard for clean mining.

All-electric Borden Mine almost ready to open

From a public lookout of the open pit to the Newmont acquistion and where the Century Project is at, everything was on the discussion table for Marc Lauzier today.

Lauzier is the general manager of Newmont Goldcorp’s Porcupine Gold Mines and was the featured speaker at the Timmins Chamber of Commerce’s quarterly Inside Their Business event. Earlier this year, the $10-billion merger of Newmont Mining Corp. and Goldcorp was completed, creating a new company – Newmont Goldcorp.

The local operations involved are the Porcupine Gold Mines, which includes the Hoyle Pond underground mine and Hollinger open-pit. Borden Lake near Chapleau is opening this year and is an all-battery-electric mine. The Century project is also still in development.

The city’s iconic McIntyre headframe is in dire need of repairs. The total cost could exceed half-a-million dollars. But the money isn’t in this year’s budget.

Timmins council on Tuesday approved some repairs to the external layer of the structure — a job which is expected to cost about $15,000 — with the plan is to complete the full repairs next year.

Mark Jensen, the city’s director of community and development services, told council there is a chance the project could qualify for government funding covering up to 75% of the cost. However, there is no guarantee the city will receive financial support from upper-tier governments.

Kidd Operations has confirmed it is investing a lot of time and effort to try to find a way to extend the life of the massive underground Glencore Kidd copper-zinc mining complex in Timmins.

Mark Furlotte, Kidd Operations general manager, responded to Northern Ontario Business and Sudbury Mining Solutions Journal to reveal the company has set up exploration drilling to target mineral zones deeper than three kilometres.

Furlotte’s comments follow the recent Big Event Mining Expo held in Timmins where the chief topic of conversation was what the future might hold for the Kidd Operations deep mine and how the company is planning to extend the life of the mine beyond the expected shutdown in 2022.

Mayor calls on government to provide incentives, saying there is “unlimited” potential for new mining development in Timmins.

The passion for mining that fuelled George Pirie’s rise through the ranks over 35 years in the industry was evident Thursday as the Timmins mayor addressed an audience of local prospectors and junior mining representatives.

Pirie was the final speaker at the investment conference held on the last day of the Big Event Canadian Mine Expo at the McIntyre Community Building. Many of those in the audience were individuals Pirie knew on a first-name basis from his experience in mining.

Pirie, currently in his first term as mayor, said one of the reasons he ran for office was that he felt he could “elevate the conversation” and be a strong advocate for the mining industry in this region.

Timmins officials not deterred by Noront announcement to accept Sault’s bid as the site for a proposed ferrochrome processing facility.

Timmins officials are not giving up hope. In light of Tuesday’s announcement by Noront Resources in favour of Sault Ste. Marie as the location for its ferrochrome processing facility, Timmins officials vow to continue to press a case for locating the smelter here.

Timmins’ hopes rest on a likelihood that when it comes time to start construction, Noront, a junior mining company, may not be the one calling the shots.

“We believe that there is lots of time to affect this decision simply because Noront will not be the company that builds this facility,” said Mayor George Pirie, who hosted a press conference in the boardroom of the Timmins Economic Development Corporation Tuesday afternoon.

South Africa is home to eight of the world’s top 10 deepest mines. The country has been one of the world’s largest gold producers for decades, even though gold production there has been declining in recent years. A mine is an artificially made pit from where minerals and other resources are extracted. The depth of a mine represents the elevation from the entrance to the deepest excavation point.

The ranking below includes only operational mines, not the ones that are no longer in operation. For instance, the Empire Mine in California has a depth of 2.08 miles, but it’s no longer in operation. Similarly, the Kolar Gold Fields in India, which was 2 miles deep, was shut down in 2001 due to low levels of output after producing gold for centuries.

When they run out of minerals at existing levels, mining companies prefer to go deeper in existing mines to extract more minerals instead of digging a new mine.

Detour Gold Corporation — owner of the Detour Lake mine, 300 kilometres northeast of Timmins — has announced the appointment of Michael (Mick) McMullen as chief executive officer and director of the company effective May 1.

McMullen has more than 25 years of international experience in the mining industry, with an accomplished background in all aspects of mining, including exploration, permitting, mine development, financing, operations, product sales, and asset acquisition and divestments as well as the debt and equity markets.

He has managed multiple operations (open pit and underground mines) across multiple jurisdictions. His experience covers a range of commodities, including copper, gold, iron ore and PGMs (platinum group metals).

Aggressive mining exploration continues throughout the Timmins mining camp, thanks to the efforts of at least one smaller producer located in nearby Black River-Matheson.

That’s where McEwen Mining set up shop after purchasing the Black Fox complex from Primero Mining in 2017. To say McEwen’s exploration plan is aggressive would be an understatement.

Company president Chris Stewart revealed in January the company has earmarked $20 million for exploration drilling on its properties in 2019, which include the Black Fox Mine, as well as the Froome, Grey Fox and Tamarack deposits.

Timmins Museum curator Karen Bachmann talks about opportunities to get historic accounts “from the horse’s mouth.”

Three things I learned this week: 1) Never believe them when they say “it’s a done deal”; 2) Never say “yes” when you really mean “no, thank you” and 3) Never, ever, let someone else tell your story.

The first two I already knew – I just needed to be reminded of those principals. The last came as a hard lesson – especially for a curator who should, at the end of the day, know better.

Museums in particular are coming a little late to the party – while we house artifacts and objects and images, that stuff really is nothing without a story that makes it all come to life. I can have people walk through my collections area and look at artifacts, but the “stuff” becomes real for them when I can tell them a story that related to that artifact.

With gold running deep through the region’s veins, a new documentary is focussing on Timmins’ rich history with the industry. Northern Gold is an original two-part documentary series debuting on TVO this week.

“It is, in a nutshell, about the history of mining in Northern Ontario told through the lens of one mining town, Timmins, Ontario,” explained director/producer Catie Lamer.

Knowing that TVO was looking at exploring gold as a theme, Lamer started digging into different histories. In Northern Ontario, she said, they found an “untold hidden history” of its impact in gold mining and how the industry shaped Ontario and Canada’s economy.
