The president of Laurentian University remains optimistic, despite news Monday the post-secondary institution is seeking creditor protection.

Robert Hache, president of LU, said in a statement Monday the university has begun “a court-supervised proceeding under federal legislation. It will not affect the day-to-day operation of the university or the student experience that defines Laurentian.

“All decisions that are made will continue to be made in the ordinary course, and will be done in the best interests of those who rely on us to provide a top-quality education.” He went on to say the student experience remains the university’s top priority.

Since its founding in 1960, Laurentian University has built a solid reputation as an excellent post-secondary school. While it was established to serve Northern Ontario, Hache said over the decades it has become known worldwide for its research and classroom work.

Despite its successes, Hache said the past decade has been difficult. The COVID-19 pandemic has not helped.

“A number of developments over the past decade have put an increased strain on the operational and financial health of the university.
