SUDBURY, January 16, 2019 – Vale and The United Steelworkers announced today that together with Vale’s 50% match to employee contributions, $473,278 has been raised in a joint fundraising campaign for the United Way Centraide North East Ontario (UWCNEO).
“I’m proud of this longstanding and shared tradition of generosity between Vale and the United Steelworkers and want to thank each and every employee who contributed to this campaign,” said Dino Otranto, Chief Operating Officer of Vale’s North Atlantic Operations and Asian Refineries. “It’s indicative of the genuine care and interest our employees have in supporting our community.
Vale matches 50 cents to every dollar employees donate to the UWCNEO. Employees can contribute via a payroll deduction program or in lump sum payments.
“United Steelworkers Local 6500 are honoured to continue supporting the United Way’s 38th annual fundraising campaign,” said Nick Larochelle, President of USW Local 6500. “We would like to thank Tina Vincent for representing USW Local 6500 as our Co-chair, once again she has infused the campaign with her enthusiasm and continuing hard work. We also would like to thank all of the USW Local 6500 canvassers and their partners, this year’s efforts have exceeded last year’s results, congratulations! This joint effort has led to another lucrative donation which will be uplifting to our community partners and the people they continue to support in 2020.”

Since 1982, Vale and the USW’s joint fundraising effort has been the largest contributor to the United Way Centraide North East Ontario community campaign, raising over $19 million for the community.
