CHAPLEAU – With Goldcorp betting hundreds of millions of dollars on the future of its new Borden Lake gold mine project near Chapleau, the federal government has chipped in with $5 million to show its faith in the project and others like it.

Federal Natural Resources Minister Amarjeet Sohi toured the new mine facility on Monday with Goldcorp officials and technical representatives of the mining equipment manufacturers who are working to make it the first all-electric underground mine in Canada, which is considered a major environmental improvement for the mining industry.

The $5 million was provided by Canada’s Clean Growth Program, an investment fund for innovative green technology, research and development in the energy, mining and forestry sectors. Another reason for the program is to reduce the impact of resource industries on the environment.

As part of his appearance in Northern Ontario as a cabinet minister, Sohi said even though he immigrated to Canada from India many years ago, he still understands the importance of protecting the land and preserving the natural environment.

“I grew up in a small village in India and I understand how critical it is that as we grow our economy, that as we develop our natural resources, that we do that with the full understanding that it has to be sustainable,” said Sohi.

Sohi said he was happy to be witnessing the birth of “the mine of future” and was confident other companies would be following suit.

“This is the future of our country. This is the future of mining. This is the future that we want to support because the days of using diesel on mine sites are numbered. Keefer Corston, Chief of the Chapleau Cree First Nation, also spoke and said he was pleased with the project.
