TIMMINS – The annual Big Event Mining Expo in Timmins is expected to hold a special appeal for students this year and others seeking a career in the mining industry.

That was a key program that was explained Tuesday when organizers for the annual Timmins event held a news conference to outline the program for the 2018 event which takes place on Wednesday June 6 and Thursday, June 7 at the McIntyre Community Building and surrounding property.

While the event normally attracts thousands who are interest in mining, mining supply and mining exploration, there will be a strong push this year on mining employment. It was revealed that 800 students are expected to take part in this year’s event. Julie Joncas, executive director of the Far Northeast Training Board (FNETB), said her organization will be hosting a career fair as part of the mining expo on the first day of the event, June 6, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The career fair will be in partnership with Northern College, Collège Boréal, NORCAT Timmins and the FNETB. This is to be held in the McIntyre ballroom. “It is open to the public. Anyone who is looking for work or looking for a change in career and wants to consider mining will be able to meet with industry reps,” said Joncas.

She said two major things will be happening that day. One will be to release the figures from the mining sector employment and hiring forecast for the Northeast Ontario region. The other will be to promote the job opportunities that exist in mining and what students need to know to take advantage of those opportunities.

Nearly 800 students from across the Northeast will be travelling to the mining expo from such places as Chapleau, New Liskeard, Englehart, Hearst, Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls and several other communities across the region, she added.
