TIMMINS – Schumacher is buzzing once again, and not just because of the helicopters flying overhead. The Big Event Canadian Mining Expo returned kicked off on Wednesday, attracting thousands of vendors, job seekers, mining company representatives and onlookers to the McIntyre Arena.

As it is every year, the arena was packed with booths of vendors looking to sell their products to the mining industry. Outside were every kind of heavy machinery from two-story-tall dump trucks to rock breakers. Inside the rink, curling club and other pavilions there booths offering all sorts of products and services including drone surveying to machine lubricants.

Timmins Mayor Steve Black said the Expo is always a highlight of the year for the community.

“It’s called the Big Event, and every year it gets a bit bigger. We’re happy for all the work organizers do to bring everyone in the mining community together; the suppliers, contractors, employers and now the investor side has been added,” said Black. “We’ve recently celebrated 100 years of mining in Timmins, and we’re looking forward to the 100 years ahead of us.”

Investment is one of the big themes of this year’s mining expo, with an investment luncheon on Thursday being one of the new additions to the Big Event this year. The luncheon is being facilitated by the Northern Ontario Angels, which maintains a network of venture capitalists who might be interested in getting in on the ground floor of a new mining project.
