TIMMINS – A one-year copper and nickel mining project in Sudbury will see several thousand tonnes of ore being trucked through Timmins to the the Northern Sun Redstone mill, south of the city. The mill is located in Eldorado Township and was the former Liberty Mines property.
It’s a good news story for Wallbridge Mining Ltd. which is now operating its first polymetallic mining operation, known as the Broken Hammer Mine, an open pit operation located in Sudbury.
It was in the spring that Wallbridge announced a custom milling agreement with Northern Sun’s Timmins operation.
Company president and CEO Marz Kord, well-known in the Timmins mining community, said the reason his company came to Timmins is because there was no custom milling available in Sudbury.
“The mills are at capacity in Sudbury. Secondly, our ore is a copper PGE (platinum group elements) ore, which is more amenable to a gravity concentrator. That’s what Liberty (Northern Sun) has.”
Kord said the ore is now being trucked to Timmins. It means the haulage trucks, contracted from William Day Construction, will be hauling up Hwy. 144, driving through Timmins along Hwy. 101, Riverside Drive and Algonquin Boulevard, and then through South Porcupine to the Langmuir Road.
“William Day Construction was selected partly because of their safety record, with respect to transportation or ore and concentrates,” said Kord. He said the company also hauls ore from Sudbury through to the Kidd Operations met site in Timmins and also to Rouyn-Noranda.
“We’re only looking at 800 tonnes per day, which is roughly about 20 truckloads per day … less than one per hour,” he said.
Kord said he is encouraged and pleased with the success of the project so far, even though he said it is limited in scope.
“The project is only a 12-month operation. It is a small open pit in Sudbury,” said Kord. He added that William Day, as the main contractor, will be sub-contracting some of the transportation work to Timmins companies.
