One of Canada’s leading public opinion analysts Nik Nanos will be the luncheon speaker at Queen’s Park for the Ontario Mining Association’s Meet the Miners day on Tuesday, March 29, 2011. The Meet the Miners event involves OMA member companies and their employees and it is designed to help shine the spotlight on the industry in provincial government circles.
The mining industry can’t take the members of the Legislature to the mines but, in a fashion, it can take the mines to the members of the Legislature at least one day a year. Mining is extremely important to the future prosperity of Ontario.
Ontario electors will be going to the polls on Thursday, October 6, 2011 for the next provincial election. Mr. Nanos is recognized as a top-flight public opinion pollster. He is president and founder of Nanos Research, the successor company to SES Research, which he started in 1987.
He is also research associate professor in Canadian Studies at the State University New York in Buffalo and past president of the Marketing Research and Intelligence Association, the governing body for market and public opinion research. His commentary and polling data are used widely by media in Canada, the United States and Europe.
At this time, mine expansions and new mine developments are reinforcing the mineral sector’s role in the foundation of the provincial economy. More than $10 billion in capital expenditures are planned by Ontario’s mining sector. This is in addition to operating expenditures and exploration activities. We are not sure other private sectors of the economy can match this level of recent activity on the capital spending front.
Meet the Miners is held in the Legislature with the support and cooperation of the Minister of Northern Development Mines and Forestry Michael Gravelle, who co-hosts the event. Last year. Mr. Gravelle was the featured lunchtime speaker. The day also involves an OMA Board of Directors meeting, sessions with key cabinet ministers and opposition leaders along with an evening reception in the Legislative Dining Room.
The OMA has been holding Meet the Miners events in various forms for more than 25 years. In 2010, at the event’s reception at the Legislature, mining attracted all party support for its contributions to the society and economy of Ontario. Watch for further news about Meet the Miners 2011.
